It is time to simplify things – and get cash for your trash!  With second hand markets topping the charts in 2009 and so far in 2010, your trash can now socially acceptably be another man’s treasure.  We all know letting go can be difficult but the extra dollars in your wallet may be just the ticket to help take the pain away.

How to get started?

Tackle the larger projects, the garage is typically a good place to start. Label three large boxes “Give”, “Sell”, and “Throw”.  Do a thorough sort and decide what category each item belongs.  Here’s a hint: if you haven’t worn it in over a year, chances are it won’t find it’s way back into your wardrobe.  Once you have finished shaking out your house, take each box to its new location:

• Donate items to a local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or organization you support.
• Sell your stuff on eBay, take them to a consignment store, or plan a garage sale.  Tell the neighbors and encourage them to do the same and host a block sale.
• Throw the trash away and be sure to recycle whenever possible.

Go with your gut when sorting through your belongings, and don’t be afraid to get rid of your castoffs and embrace the idea of starting fresh.
